In his day, Pete Maravich was called a hot dog and a show-off, because no one in his era did the sorts of things that he could do. He had total control of the ball, and was essentially unstoppable, and people in his era didn’t know how to take him.

At LSU, he averaged 44.2 ppg, and that was without the three-point shot. Some estimate that if he had played with the three in college, Maravich might have averaged 57 points per game.

It’s freakish territory. You can understand a Wilt Chamberlain doing that, but Maravich? A spindly, 6-5 white guard?

Incredible.

He was misunderstood in the pros too, but he certainly had his moments, and one of his greatest games came at the expense of the visiting New York Knicks, whom he lit up for an astonishing 68 points on February 25, 1977.

And keep in mind, again, that he did this before the NBA adopted the three-point shot.

One wonders what he could have done in today’s game.
