Brandin Podziemski ruled out of Warriors' NBA season opener with back injury originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Warriors guard Brandin Podziemski will have to wait a little longer than his Golden State teammates to start his 2026-27 NBA season.

The 23-year-old, fresh off a five-year, $110 million contract extension, has been ruled out of the Warriors’ season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday at Crypto.com Arena with bilateral lower back soreness, according to the latest NBA injury report. Podziemski missed Golden State’s last three practices as he dealt with the ailment.

Star point guard Steph Curry, who tweaked his right ankle during Golden State’s open practice Sunday, is listed as probable for the game, while center Charles Bassey is questionable with right patellar tendinopathy.

Podziemski played all 82 games for the Warriors last season — the only player on the roster to do so. But that streak will come to an end Wednesday as becomes the fourth key player who won’t be on the floor for the season’s opening game, joining Jimmy Butler (knee), Moses Moody (knee) and Kristaps Porziņģis (illness) as Warriors who have been ruled out.

De’Anthony Melton is likely to slide into Podziemski’s spot in the Warriors’ starting five alongside Curry, though Brandon Williams impressed during the preseason and is an option as well.
